Oğuz Kaplangı, a prolific musician based in Edinburgh has been in the music business for over 20 years, mainly composes for TV, theatre, advertising and big screen productions. His compositions explore a wide array of musical styles, ranging from electronic, rock, dub to pop, world, ambient, orchestral and oriental.
Oğuz composed the music for Zinnie Harris’ adaptation of Ionesco’s famous play Rhinoceros and performed his music live on stage. Rhinoceros was staged at the Royal Lyceum Theatre, in co-production with the Edinburgh International Festival in association with DOT Theatre Istanbul in 2017. The play was directed by Murat Daltaban.
Oğuz was nominated for the “Best Music and Sound” by Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland for 2017-2018 with the music he composed for Rhinoceros (CATS AWARDS).
Rhinoceros and its music received astounding feedback from the press and the audience, and Oğuz was asked to play live on BBC Radio 3 during the run. He performed his tracks on Lopa Kothari’s “World on 3” live together with Scottish bagpiper Annie Grace who also played bagpipes on 2 tracks in the Rhinoceros album.
Oğuz was nominated for the Best Stage Music at the Afife Theatre Awards 2017 in Istanbul for the music he composed for “How To Hold Your Breath?”, also written by Zinnie Harris and directed by Murat Daltaban.
In 2018, his music for the Turkish adaptation of the play “Meet Me At Dawn” written by Zinnie Harris was released as an album by Elec-Trip Records.
In the United States, his music is being used in TV shows including A&E’s Emmy-nominated, “Wahlburgers”, “Donnie Loves Jenny”, “Nightwatch”, “Lock Up”, “Sexy Beasts”, “According To Alex”, “Killer Kids”, “Young Marvels”, “Big Brew Theory” and “Bizarre Foods”.
Oğuz has worked with CP+B London, Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam, Ogilvy & Mather, Leo Burnett, DDB, BBDO, Saatchi & Saatchi, Thompson, MullenLowe, McCann Erickson and many boutique agencies and film production companies in Istanbul.
He has scored for Turkish box office hits like “Recep İvedik” series as well as Turkey’s first animation film “Kötü Kedi Şerafettin / Bad Cat”. He has also composed corporate theme music for Turkish national TV channels.
Besides his music production company in Edinburgh, Oğuz is the owner of “Elec-Trip Music Productions” in Istanbul and the man behind “Express Jingles”, a library music catalogue represented in many countries.
Oğuz is the producer of several albums such as Istanbul Calling series, Techno Roman Project, and Undertone and Studio Plastico by Portecho. He has arranged several tracks for international artists including Valderrama (Spain), Alkistis Protopsalti (Greece), Suzy (Israel) and Encarna Salazar (former member of Azucar Moreno). He was a member of Turkish electro-rock bands Zi Punt and Rebel Moves.
Oğuz has a masters’ certificate in “Orchestration for Film and TV” from Berklee College of Music. He graduated from Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ).
